Today marks a key milestone with the transformation of the Global Pact Coalition into the Green Rights Coalition. Since its inception, the Global Pact Coalition has consistently worked to promote a Global Pact for the Environment, a binding international treaty recognizing environmental rights and duties. Recently, major advancements in international environmental law, including the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of the human right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment, have driven the Coalition to expand its scope beyond the initial Pact project.
The Green Rights Coalition is dedicated to advancing the recognition of a new generation of fundamental rights related to environmental protection. As advocates for environmental rights, our mission is to provide citizens worldwide with the legal tools necessary to defend these rights and preserve our planet. By promoting environmental rights, we aim to ensure the full realization of other human rights, such as the right to life, health, food, clean air, and water, while protecting the environment and biodiversity.
Operating at international, regional, and national levels, we commit to:
Advocate for the adoption of a binding international text enshrining environmental rights and related principles, such as a Global Pact for the Environment.
Support campaigns for the recognition and protection of environmental rights within regional frameworks, including the European, Inter-American, and African human rights systems.
Promote the integration of environmental rights into national constitutions by actively participating in initiatives like the "Green Amendment" in the United States.
Our goal is to stimulate research on environmental rights by educating and raising awareness about the importance of the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment, as well as all associated rights and duties, and the fundamental principles of environmental law. We believe that through effective implementation and enforcement of our environmental rights, we can strengthen our ability to protect the environment and preserve our planet.
